How to Choose & Measure for Men's Ethnic Wear
Ethnic wear is an investment. This guide helps you measure correctly, choose the right garment for every occasion, and order with complete confidence.
1. Kurta & Kurta-Pajama Sets
The kurta is the cornerstone of men's ethnic dressing — versatile enough for a casual gathering and refined enough for a festive occasion. Key fit points:
- Chest: Should fit comfortably with 1–2 inches of ease. Avoid both pulling and excess bagginess.
- Shoulder: The seam should sit exactly at the edge of your shoulder — not hanging down the arm.
- Length: Standard kurta length falls to mid-thigh. Longer styles (knee-length) suit formal occasions.
- Sleeve: Full sleeves should reach the wrist. For comfort in warmer months, opt for half-sleeve styles.
2. Sherwani
The sherwani is the definitive garment for weddings, engagements, and major ceremonies. Fit is everything — a well-fitted sherwani commands presence.
- Chest: Measure with a thin innerwear. Sherwani chest allowance is typically 1 inch — snugger than a kurta.
- Length: Sherwani length ideally falls to just above the knee (46–52 inches depending on height).
- Shoulder: Critical for a sharp silhouette. A dropped shoulder seam makes even premium sherwanis look ill-fitted.
- Paired with: Churidar pyjama (fitted at ankle) or straight salwar. Churidar gives a more formal, elongated look.
3. Bandhgala Suit
The bandhgala (also called Jodhpuri suit or Nehru collar suit) bridges traditional and contemporary. Perfect for cocktail functions, receptions, and formal events.
- Jacket fit: Should button closed with 1 inch ease at the chest. No pulling or wrinkling at the buttons.
- Length: Jacket falls to the hip (approx 28–30 inches). Trouser should be well-pressed with a clean break at the shoe.
- Shoulder: Structured shoulder seam must sit precisely at your shoulder point for a sharp, formal silhouette.
4. Nehru Jacket
A Nehru jacket layered over a plain or printed kurta is one of the most versatile looks in men's ethnic dressing — appropriate for Diwali parties, mehendi ceremonies, or festive family events.
- Fit: Should sit close to the body without restricting movement. 1 inch ease at chest over a kurta.
- Length: Typically falls to the hip (24–28 inches). Longer styles create a more formal look.
- Fabric choice: Brocade and velvet for evening events; cotton and linen blends for daytime functions.
